The effect of the Waldensian valleys is still today a significant experience,
it being an area of modest dimensions but with a very precise and well defined identity.
Situated in western Piedmont, west of Pinerolo, it covers an area of about 700-800 square
kilometres. It is composed of the valleys of Pellice and its tributaries, of Germanasca, as far as
the right bank of the Chisone in its lower course.
The areas have a predominantly alpine character with a considerable variety of surroundings.
The Germanasca Valley, deep set and branching out, has more evident alpine features, with
settlements between 900 and 1500 metres.
The Pellice Valley is composed of a valley bottom at 400-650 metres and by steep slopes which
reach, in limited spaces, an altitude of 3000 metres. The remaining valleys of RorĂ , Angrogna and
Pramollo are situated at a height of
900-1000 metres with a moderate incline.
The areas of San Giovanni and Prarostino are hilly, situated at 600 metres. This variety of
surroundings has led to a great diversity in the crops cultivated and in the farming systems
adopted. |
